Know Your Body

Before I share this long story, please know that I am not bashing on doctors or prescription medicine….

Most people don’t know, but for the past 14-15 years, I’ve struggled with a condition that had me in chronic pain. There were times in high school when I was hospitalized. Doctors did every test possible & couldn’t find the cause, so I was placed on hormonal medicine. The medicine worked wonders, but being on prescription meds for over a decade isn’t always the best thing either. I came off the medicine almost 2 years ago, but the pain was getting excruciatingly worse, and I was having to take 800mg ibuprofen every 6 or so hours.

I went back to the doctor after about a year of doing this, and they gave me more prescriptions. I kept feeling like I was treating the symptoms, but I wanted to address the cause. What in the world could cause an otherwise healthy person, who rarely gets sick, to be in so much pain?

I went into prayer mode. I’d always prayed for the pain to go away, but this time I was pleading for wisdom to find the cause of when all this started. Many people suggested I change my diet. So I went gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, sugar free, (even tried gluten free, sugar free, and vegan all at the same time) but nothing worked. I started trying to remember what changed in high school, because that’s when the pain started. I remembered how allergic my skin is to scented body wash & lip stick/chapstick. (I can use them for a few days, but after 3-5 days of consistently using them, I break out in hives.) I also remembered how I switched to stronger antiperspirant in high school when my track workouts started intensifying.

So 3 months ago, I tested it out. I changed to fragrance free lotion with as few ingredients as possible (since I’ve already been using fragrance free body wash for 10+ years now), and switched from antiperspirant to paraben/aluminum free deodorant.

I am so grateful to say that with these changes, my pain has reduced by about 90%, my hormonal acne has reduced by about 95%, and I no longer have to overdose on pain medicine anymore. It blows my mind to think that I was unknowingly poisoning myself every day for over a decade, and just kept medicating myself to numb the symptoms of my body crying out. I just kept repeating the cycle!!

I’m NOT saying to stop taking your doctor prescribed medicine. There are many wise doctors in the world & I’m forever grateful for the one who 12 years ago thought outside the box & realized my skin condition was due to scented soap & chose to not prescribe me more medicine like the previous 2 doctors I’d been to.
I just wanted to share this story to say, please read the ingredients in not only the foods you buy, but also in the products you put on your skin on a regular basis. If there are too many ingredients you can’t pronounce, take the time to pick up another brand and read their ingredients before making the choice. Healthier products are more expensive, and reading ingredients will add a lot more time to your grocery shopping, but it’s all worth it.

So please, listen to your body, learn your body, and take care of it to the best of your ability. You only get 1!
